America vs. Michael Jackson

michael-jackson

An unreleased Michael Jackson song popped up on TMZ last week that sounds very similar to the 1972 America hit “A Horse with No Name“.  According to TMZ:

“[They were] told several years ago [that] America’s manager gave his group’s permission for Jackson to record the song, “A Place with No Name” — despite the similarity.”

America - "A Horse with No Name" (1972)

UPDATE 3/30/215: According to Mark in the comments below:

The album booklet for Xscape states that A Place With No Name was recorded during an early Invincible session in 1998 and it was released last year.

There’s also a song that Michael did with Paul McCartney called ‘The Man’. The chorus is reminiscent of America’s ‘Ventura Highway’, which – coincidentally – was sampled in the song ‘Someone To Call My Lover’ by Jackson’s sister Janet.

The clip is not the original America version of “A Horse With No Name,” which sounds more like “A Place With No Name” than the version you have. Please change it.

Following the release of Xscape, I’ve been listening to Michael Jackson and the string lines from Little Susie (1995) sound like the wedding favourite, Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof.

A Place with No Name has recently been released as a single.

I’ll connect this comment with the posts on which are my best comments, kind of the best of Mark Adams. Of course, you might wonder about some of my choices, but I’ve placed an emphasis on content over presentation, ones which discuss several songs similar to each other, several additions to existing comparisons and comments which trace elements of a song back further and hits which sound like older songs.
