Iggy Pop vs. Jet

Submitted by Drew and David.

As soon as I heard this song I knew there was something suspicious. Jet‘s 2005 track “Are You Gonna be My Girl” lifts heavily from Iggy Pop‘s 1977 classic “Lust for Life”. (They also must’ve made a killing from the Apple iPod ads.)

Jet’s song also sounds similar to the beginning of The White Stripes’ song ‘Screwdriver’ (which was on the Stripes’ debut album from 1999).

    Just thought I’d say.

Another rip off of Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” is
Travis’ “Selfish Jean” from 2007′s ‘The Boy With No Name’

Take a little to the bass line of The Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love” and a lot of other Motown songs. Instead of Jet ripping Iggy Pop it’s more like Jet and Iggy Pop ripping The Supremes.

I thought the same thing when I noticed the similarities between the two,
I was raging pretty hard about the whole thing until I decided to look it up,
This has come up before and if I remember correctly both Iggy Pop and Jet have openly stated both songs were intended as a homage to Motown.

The line’s pretty thin but as long as they openly admit it and intend it as a tribute it’s less “ripping off” and more “like covering but different” imo.

I suppose all the arts take from the past to make it new again.
