Muse vs. Doctor Who

Submitted by Glynis

I’m a big fan of the television theme comparisons here on the site. Last year British rockers Muse put out a track that contains a hook very much like the theme to the  BBC show Doctor Who.  Here’s a sample of the original theme from 1963 followed by the 2007 version recorded by the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales .

Muse – “Uprising” (2009)
“Doctor Who Theme” (1963)
“Doctor Who Theme” (2007)

Hi Michael, Wow, that’s subtle in that track, but pretty similar. I’ll update this post at some point with it.

Pink Floyd did this one intentionally, if I recall correctly. They’ve been interviewed before, and they’ve said that in the studio, when they were on breaks, they liked to watch Doctor Who and Monty Python. Still looking for a Pink Floyd version of the Lumberjack Song, but nothing as of yet ;)

Thanks for the insight on that Michael. I can think of a few other things they might have also been doing while on their breaks.

And you can add Bondie’s “Call Me” (when they sing “so come on”) and Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky” and Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” to the list. Also, speed up Sparks’ “I Can’t Believe That You Would Fall For All The Crap In This Song” and you’re even closer! Even the vocal style is reminiscent.

And there’s plenty more, I’m sure.

Thanks for the link. I love how the “Call Me” line is placed over the high guitar riff. Pretty great!

    Everyone forgot dude!!

Blondies ‘call me’ was GIGANTICALLY based on black sabbaths “children of the grave”

Makes sense though. Sabbath is british. im sure with all their occult stuff they were into doctor who, or at least watched it here and there

Also “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid sounds similar to Doctor Who.

The notes in the Muse tune are like the opening guitar riff on Billy Idol’s “White Wedding”
