The Beatles vs. Bon Jovi

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Submitted by Michael

Have a listen to the verse in Bon Jovi‘s 1989 power ballad “I’ll Be There For You” and the verse of The Beatles “Don’t Let Me Down” (1969). And while you’re listening, here’s a delightful tidbit via wikipedia:

The verses have an eerily and uncredited similarity (both musically and melodically) to John Lennon’s Beatles’ track ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ (recorded during the Get Back sessions) and the chorus was supposedly culled from an unreleased song by Joel Ellis of Cats in Boots and Heavy Bones. Joel Ellis has said that Lehua Reid (Richie Sambora’s ex-fiancée) regaled him with anecdotes regarding Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora ‘sitting at the piano for hours with a box full of tapes they got from people and going through the songs looking for stuff they could rip off and laughing about it, your [Ellis'] song was played over and over and over’.

I’m also very intrigued by this Joel Ellis song as well. If anyone can get a hold of it please send it my way.

Later towards the end of CIB[Cats In Boots] I started dating Richie [Sambora]‘s ex-fiancee Lehua Reid, one night we were laying around listening to old tapes of The Hoax and that song came on and she lit up and looked at me saying “…this is you??!!” “I remember John and Richie sitting at the piano for hours with a box full of tapes they got from people and going through the songs looking for stuff they could rip off and laughing about it, your song was played over and over and over….” Well, the rest is old news.

Blondie vs. Black Sabbath

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Josh submitted this one.

I’m just as surprised as Josh that nobody has submitted this one yet. Check out Blondie‘s 1980 hit “Call Me” alongside Black Sabbath‘s 1971 “Children of the Grave”. Even the vocals are a bit similar in that Ozzy kind of way.

Jessica Simpson vs. Mariah Carey vs. Vince Vance & The Valiants vs. Bobby Vinton

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Thanks to Jamie for sending this.

‘Tis the season for sharing, being merry and re-recording the same holiday songs – again. Jessica Simpson has tapped right into the mega success of Mariah Carey and Vince Vance & The Valiants‘ songs of the same name “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Why didn’t she just go all the way and give it the same title? Not only does Simpson’s track “My Only Wish” from her new holiday album have a strong musical resemblance to Carey’s and The Valiant’s but the lyrics still tell the same old story.

Verse

Mariah Carey – “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (1994)
Jessica Simpson – “My Only Wish” (2010)

Chorus

Mariah Carey – “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (1994)
Jessica Simpson – “My Only Wish” (2010)

But wait, there’s more! Have a listen to Bobby Vinton‘s 1964 classic “My Heart Belongs Only To You” (1964) along side Vince Vance & the Valiants.

UPDATE: R.E.M. vs. Cheap Trick vs. Mega Man vs. Journey

This is an update to R.E.M. vs. Cheap Trick

Mike says

The Elec Man theme from the video game Mega Man sounds freakishly similar to both of these. You should check it out.

Brilliant find Mike! Mega Man! And in my travels I also discovered a bit of talk about Journey‘s 1983 power ballad “Faithfully”. Here is all of them:

Mega Man – “Elec Man Theme” (1987)
Journey – “Faithfully” (1983)
R.E.M. – “All the Right Friends” (1983)
Cheap Trick – “Way of the World” (1979)

Jason Mraz vs. Jonas Brothers

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Thanks to Andrew for sending me this.

Jason Mraz recently slammed the Jonas Brothers camp for it’s similarity of his 2008 hit “I’m Yours”.

“That happened without even knowing! We had the song and it didn’t have the ‘My Wicked Heart’ bit in it and then we put the vocal in and we were like, ‘Why does it sound so familiar?’.”
“Then we realised it was because we were listening to ‘Under The Bridge’ the day before! We were saying, ‘Should we change it? Should we not? What should we do?’. Sod it, no, we’re just gonna keep it, it works, it’s the way it is.”

“I heard the song, and it was just a tremendous, tremendous horror of a tune. I noticed a few similarities in the melody, but it wasn’t enough to pick up the phone and argue with somebody about it. If anything, I just wanted my $1.29 back that I spent on iTunes” – PopEater.com

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Diana Vickers

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Zac just informed me that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are considering suing Britain’s X Factor finalists Diana Vickers for this similar hook in her 2010 song “My Wicked Heart”. Vickers even admits to it!

“That happened without even knowing! We had the song and it didn’t have the ‘My Wicked Heart’ bit in it and then we put the vocal in and we were like, ‘Why does it sound so familiar?’.”

R.E.M. vs. Cheap Trick

Maybe there’s a reason why R.E.M. didn’t release “All the Right Friends” until 1993, 10 years after it was recorded. Check out Cheap Trick’s 1979 rocker “Way of the World”.

Calvin Harris vs. Chris Brown vs. DJ Sammy

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Zeno just brought this to my attention.

Scottish producer Calvin Harris recently accused Chris Brown of lifting his 2009 track “I’m Not Alone”.  Chris Brown’s new single “Yeah 3x” features a nearly identical synth hook.

The Scottish musician said he “choked on [his] cornflakes” when Brown’s new single, Yeah 3x, came on the radio while he was eating breakfast.

After listening to these tracks for a few minutes I’m now reminded of DJ Sammy‘s 2002 dance cover of Bryan Adam’s  ”Heaven” (Featuring Do). There’s probably a few hundred more of these out there.

Has Green Day been sued for this? Check out Green Day‘s  2000 hit single “Warning” and The Kinks‘  1968 classic “Picture Book”.
