Muse vs. Top Gear (Super NES)

April 23rd, 2011

Submitted by Max

If you discover Muse on this site for the first time you can be assured of at least two things: They like Dr. Who and Super Nintendo game music. Have a listen to this music from Super Nintendo’s 1992 high speed car race game “Top Gear” and the etherial synth line in Muse’s 2001 “Bliss”.

While we’re here I can’t help notice the lead melody in the intro of “Top Gear”. In this sample below it starts after the first run of the arpeggiation. It sounds like a rather popular song with a female vocal. Help!

Hannah Montana vs. Lustra

April 23rd, 2011

Thanks to Dawn and her 8th grade music class in Gahanna, Ohio for sending this in.

We’ve seen Hannah Montana’s alter ego (or is it the other way around?) on here a few times already. In 2006 the band Lustra released a song for the teen comedy “EuroTrip” called “Scotty Doesn’t Know”.  In 2007 Hannah Montana released “Rock Star”.  According to this 2008 article on MTV Lustra had considered legal action but I can’t seem to find a follow up to this.  Have a listen:

Zombie Nation vs. Lazy Jones

April 12th, 2011

Submitted by Kim

I love the video game submissions that come in.  You’ve probably heard Zombie Nation‘s “Kernkraft 400″  (2000)  in one remixed form or another but did you realize the synth riff was lifted right from a 1984 Commodore 64 game called “Lazy Jones“?  In addition to the sound clip below, you really need to see the game clip here on youtube to get the full effect. According to this NME article from 2000 ”Mr Zombie, aka Splank, has had to pay an undisclosed amount to David Whittaker, the programmer who wrote the original.”

Lady Gaga vs. Cirque Du Soleil

This is a strange one. Although I can’t seem to pinpoint this directly there are definitely a few similarities with Gaga‘s “Alejandro” and the title song to Cirque Du Soleil’s Grammy nominated ”Alegría“.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers vs. Noah and the Whale

March 3rd, 2011

Submitted by Dustin and Craig

After two people sent me the same track this week I figured I would post this up. This is my first time hearing Noah and the Whale and I must say there’s definitely a strong Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers resemblance here. Check ou the chorus from the Heartbreakers‘ “Don’t Come Around Here No More” (1985) and Noah’s “Life Goes On” (2011).

Madonna vs. Public Enemy

February 23rd, 2011

According to Songfacts.com Public Enemy decided not to sue Madonna for sampling “Security of the First World” (1988) in her 1990 controversial song and video “Justify My Love”.  According to Wikipedia additional controversy surrounded the track as well:

“Justify My Love” was written by Lenny KravitzIngrid Chavez and Madonna. Kravitz wrote the song for Madonna, based on a poem written by friend and Prince protégé Ingrid Chavez. Kravitz added the title hook and chorus. Madonna contributed a few lines. Chavez was not credited for the song and later sued Kravitz in 1992. She received an out-of-court settlement, and gained a co-writing credit.

Lady Antebellum vs. The Alan Parsons Project

February 16th, 2011

Thanks to “sodapop” for submitting a comment about this one.

Lady Antebellum took home Song of The Year at the 2011 Grammy Awards for their song “Need You Now”.  In 1982 British progressive rock band The Alan Parsons Project released “Eye in the Sky” which shares a resemblance to the “Need You Know” melody. Have a listen!

Lady Gaga vs. Madonna

February 14th, 2011

Thanks to Augie for sending me this.

Adding to the Lady Gaga on ThatSongSoundsLike we have a new single called “Born This Way” that suffers from a strong resemblance to Madonna‘s 1989 hit “Express Yourself”. It sounds like Gaga used the old “use the chorus as the verse trick”. Have a listen to these edits.
Enjoy!

Lady Gaga “Born This Way” verse and  Madonna “Express Yourself” chorus

Lady Gaga – “Born This Way” (2011)
Madonna – “Express Yourself” (1989)

Verse and Choruse of both

Lady Gaga – “Born This Way” (2011)
Madonna – “Express Yourself” (1989)

I also included Madonna’s “Vogue” (1990) since there is a similar “talking” style in this Gaga track as well.
