Mark B. and Camille pointed out the similarities of the basslines of Garbage‘s 2002 hit “Cherry Lips” and Nikka Costa‘s 2001 “Everybody Got Their Something”.

Another good example is the song “Rocketeer” by Far East Movement and Ryan Tedder and Somebody to Love by Justin Bieber
I honestly thought Cherry Lips WAS Everybody’s Got Their Something at first. I was ready to sing the words and everything. I am surprised not many people have noticed this.
I think “If You Want Me To Stay” by Sly and the Family Stone probably was the first place I heard that bassline… a Funk Classic worth checking out if you like either/both of the songs above as I do!

YES! I was listening to “If You Want Me to Stay” the other day and I couldn’t help thinking that the bass in “Everybody Got Their Something” sounded almost identical. Thanks for confirming I’m not crazy haha. I’m just now realizing “Cherry Lips” sounds similar too
I can enlarge this.
The intro is very much, Green Day – Warning and The kinks – Picture book
Thanks Tobias! I also have those here!

Well the predecessor in my opinion is Sly and The Family Stone’s 1973 song “If You Want Me to Stay”.
The basslines are similar as well as Gnarls Barkley seems to have borrowed the same feel for their bassline ion “Crazy” as well as Kool and The Gangs “Shes So Fresh” LOL!!
I love this site BTW! Just found it and have been on here a full hour….. 🙂

Aaron Carter – Aaron’s Party” (Very Beginning) Sounds like “Garbage – “Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)”” too.
Juicy – Better than Ezra (mainly the beginning) also sounds similar to both of these
Totally!
