Did Kid Rock rip this vocal melody from The White Stripes?

Check out the vocal melody in Kid Rock’s “Born Free” from 2010. Then listen to the vocal melody from The White Stripes song “As Ugly as I Seem” from 2005.

absolutely – he just took the main guitar riff and pretty much the tune/title from ‘Born to Run’. I ain’t a springsteen fan but kid rock – jesus, what a fuckin crock ‘a shit that guy is. and jack white is no prolific original either – he lifts a LOT of stuff, but i’m disappointed that he’d rip from Simon + Garfunkel like that. one of their best tunes.

He probably didn’t think of it that way. After all, if you’re going to steal music, why not steal from the best?

I think all these songs actually sound a lot like the verse from the Sly and the family stone’s classic, Stand! (1968) , which pre-dates them. Have a listen!

Seems like S&G have the earliest version. Homeward Bound was released in February 1966, while “Stand” was released in May, 1969.
