Free vs. Joe Walsh vs. Kenny Loggins (aka 2 Songs That Sound Like Footloose)

Free vs. Joe Walsh vs. Kenny Loggins

I was going to add a fancy “Footloose”-like font on this image of Free’s Paul Rodgers, Joe Walsh and an 80s Kenny Loggins but I couldn’t find the font quick enough.

Mark and Dawn both suggested Kenny Loggins vs. Joe Walsh (James Gang). As I was flipping through my drafts (there are a LOT!) I found Free‘s “All Right Now” vs. Footloose. This is a good one!

Free - "All Right Now" (May 1970)
James Gang - "Funk #49" (July 1970)
Kenny Loggins - "Footloose" (1984)

I can hear the similarity between Funk #49 and Footloose, but not All Right Now and Footloose. Some song sound-alikes seem to be like celebrity look-alikes where the only similarity is a facial expression or a hairstyle.

Sorry, I can hear it now, I guess I was just thinking that the melodies are nothing alike. I still think that all of these are implying a suspended chord and its resolution, or something like that.

You didn’t select the part where the melody of All Right Now and Footloose sound similar, though. I don’t think it can be just coincidence, after considering Paul Rogers’ album and song Cut Loose, as I’ve mentioned before, although they don’t sound similar.

And the melody of Let’s Kiss (Like Angels Do) by Wendy Matthews sounds like that of All Right Now in the chorus.

And how about Lick it Up by Kiss? It’s not as similar as those three though. Also, the bass line of Lick it Up sounds like Beds Are Burning and others.

I’ve always said that he riff from “Hot Blooded” sounds like a prototype of many 80s KiSS riffs.

Anyway, something funny about this post is that Paul Rogers from Free had an album and a song in 1983 called Cut Loose.

To me, they all kind of sound like the solo from A Hard Day’s Night (By the Beatles), as well as rock’ n’ me by the Steve Miller Band.

Footloose is a blatant copy of Funk 49 and it’s been bugging me for a long time!! I want justice, I want a lawsuit!

I think justice would come in the form of a lawsuit from Paul Rogers or on his behalf, as he had a solo album and song in 1983 called Cut Loose.

Funny, I was in a conversation on another message board where someone was asking about songs that sound like “Modern Love” by David Bowie, and my immediate thought was “Footloose.”

Oddly, that wasn’t the song that THEY were thinking of. So I did a search for “sounds that sound like Footloose,” and was surprised to NOT see “Modern Love” listed. So while I’m here, I suppose you can add that to the chain along with a newer entry: “Fascination” by Alphabeat.
