Jawbreaker is one of my all time favorite bands. Granted the four chord punk riff simplicity of the “Boxcar” (1994) verse is nothing mind blowingly original. But check out Green Day‘s “She’s a Rebel” (2004) and the similarity is unmistakable.

Thanks. Do you like these sort of posts because they give you an excuse to listen to some of your favourite music? Anyway, I have a crazy Green Day comparison, but maybe it’s a bit of a stretch, the verse of Minority (2000) sounds kind of like Mickey Mouse’s theme song.
Ha. Yeah, I would definitely prefer these over One Direction.
Maybe you could save yourself the hassle by asking Ben to look into the other One Direction similarities, except maybe you wouldn’t be that cruel.
For another Disney and Green Day comparison, I think part of Geek Stink Breath (1995) sounds like part of the Donald Duck presents music.

A guy by the name of Paul Pike claimed to have written the songs from American Idiot and filed for a court case with scant evidence in 2006.
Horseshoes and Handgrenades (2009) sounds like a profanity-filled version of main offender by The Hives (2000), and I guess Hitchin’ a Ride (1997) sounds quite a bit like Stray Cat Strut not just in the popular riff, but in the melody as well.
And the riff from Boulevard of Broken Dreams sounds kind of like She’s My Heroine by Agent 51 (2003). Anyway, I don’t know how likely it is they heard these songs.
Guess I’d better add the verse melody of If Today Was Your Last Day by Nickelback (2008). If Today Was Your Last Day peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Adult Top 40, #1 on the UK Rock chart and #26 on the ARIA charts. Boulevard of Broken Dreams was the first song to top the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks (for 14 weeks), Modern Rock Tracks (16 weeks), Adult Top 40 (11 weeks) and Mainstream Top 40 (4 weeks) and also topped the Pop 100. It was also Green Day’s first song to reach the Adult Contempory chart, peaking at #30 and reached #5 on the ARIA charts. The guitar solo or instrumental break of BOBD sounds even more like She’s My Heroine.
Green Day also has Restless Heart Syndrome (2009).
And maybe I could add Nightlife (2012), but it’s in a drastically different style.
And funnily enough, Nightlife also sounds like this.
But Horseshoes and Handgrenades also sounds like their own Prosthetic Head (1997), which sounds kind of like Is She Really Going Out with Him? by Joe Jackson (1979).
And Last of the American Girls (2009) sounds kind of like a cross between Fun, Fun, Fun (1964) and When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbing Along).
Anyway, Green Day, Jawbreaker and Dillinger Four all started out playing at The Alternative Music Foundation, 924 Gilman Street. Also, maybe they had heard She’s My Heroine as Agent 51 was signed to their Adeline Records in 2001, but then again, the album which contained She’s My Heroine was released by another company. They could have still heard them practising the song in the studio before they left the company.
And the riff from Platypus (I Hate You) off of nimrod in 1997 sounds kind of like Master of Puppets by Metallica (1986).

This might be a bit of a stretch, but the riff from East Jesus Nowhere (2009) sounds kind of like that of Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull (1971). Anyway, it sounds more like Locomotive Breath than Disposable Teens by Marilyn Manson, where the only similarity is the deadened strums. There is also a video performance for the Green Day song where Will Ferrell plays Cowbell.

The Forgotten (2012) sounds kind of like Always On My Mind, written by Willie Nelson and originally performed by Brenda Lee (1972). Interesting that the similar portions begin at around the same point and that’s not the beginning. All I know about the chart performance of The Forgotten is that it reached #39 on the UK Rock Chart, according to Wikipedia, but there are some references. I suppose Megan Washington’s new song Begin Again sounds kind of like these, but I can’t find it on YouTube.

And the melody of Boxcar sounds kind of like Exhuming McCarthy by R.E.M, off of Document (1987) and Strange by Wire (1977). A comment states that Strange sounds like Sister Ray by The Velvet Underground (1968). R.E.M. covered Strange on the same album.
