10 One Direction Songs that Sound Like Other Songs

This is a fairly long list of One Direction (1D) songs that sound like other songs. They seem to do this a lot. Well, the songwriters behind the curtain do. The most interesting thing about this is that most of these One Direction songs came out 1 year after the song they sound like. That doesn’t seem coincidental here. This is a pattern.

 

“Live While We’re Young” sounds like The Clash “Should I Stay or Should I Go”

If you look really closely at the cover of The Clash‘s Combat Rock (1982) you will see the boy band One Direction in the background. This explains it all.

Oh, and “I Don’t Have to Try” is produced by Lukasz Gottwald (aka Dr. Luke).  Gottwald, thanks for giving me so much great material for this site.

Avril and Gottwald were taken to court for her 2007 track “Girlfriend”. It sounds a lot like The Rubinoos‘ 1979 “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”.

I just read Butch Walker‘s entertaining book Drinking with Strangers: Music Lessons from a Teenage Bullet Belt. He’s also produced a lot of Avril Lavigne’s tracks. He recounts a wild night with Tommy Lee, taking a helicopter ride to a Peaches show. He’s a big fan but not listed as producer on “I Don’t Have to Try”. He also has a lot of beef with another produced he calls “Larry”.

Here’s another Lukasz Gottwald (aka Dr. Luke) produced track for the site. This time for the 2007 Avril Lavigne song “Girlfriend”.   The chorus similarity did not go unnoticed by seventies power pop band The Rubinoos whose 1979 single “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” shares a striking resemblance.  In 2007 Rubinoos frontman Tommy Dunbar  and co-writer James Gangwer filed suit in U.S. District Court in Northern California against Lavigne,  Dr. Luke, RCA Records and Apple Inc.

“We are not so naive as to chalk it up to some sort of cosmic coincidence,” Dunbar said in a statement on Thursday. “The lyric, the meter, the rhythm … they’re identical.”

According to PopCrunch.com the case was settled out of court in 2008.

Avril Lavigne has reached a settlement in a lawsuit that accused her of plagiarizing her hit single, “Girlfriend.”

I’d also like to note that The Ramones have a song called “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” released in 1976.   It doesn’t sound like either of these.
