Battle of the Saxes (Ariana Grande vs. Jason Derulo vs. Macklemore vs. Wild Sugar)

It has come to my attention from various sources that there is a saxophone epidemic on our hands. I think the interesting thing about it is that the saxophone has always played an odd role in pop music. You have your Kenny G., the late Clarence Clemons (of  Bruce Springstein’s outfit), INXS’s Kirk Pengilly and a slew of other sunglass-wearing guys swaying in the background waiting for their time in the spotlight. I never really thought the saxophone was consider cool in rock and hip-hop but somehow it creeps in there from time to time. Is it making a comeback?

So I can’t decipher if today’s artists are using this instrument ironically in their music or not (I’m guessing a yes for Macklemore).

Let’s have a listen to some saxophone soundalikes:
(note: one of the producers on “Problem” is Max Martin. He has made numerous appearances on this site)

Ariana Grande - "Problem" (2014)
Macklemore - "Thrift Shop" (2012)

Some similarities here as well:

Jason Derulo - "Talk Dirty" (2013)

In a previous post I compared Macklemore vs. Le1f

Le1f - "Wut" (April 2012)

Macklemore - "Thrift Shop" (August 2012)

I thought it was fitting to bring The Beastie Boys into the mix. Their  song “Brass Monkey” features a sample from Wild Sugar. I included them both here:

Wild Sugar - "Bring it Here" (1981)
Beastie Boys - "Brass Monkey" (1986)

And finally in I thought there was a hint of the melody and rhythm of C&C Music Factory’s famous track in Grande’s riff.

C N C Music Factory - "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" (1990)
Ariana Grande - "Problem" (2014)

The Black Eyed Peas vs. Bryan Pringle

Thanks to Eleanor for submitting this one

After some quick googling it looks like this one was in and out of court. I’m sure The Black Eyed Peas‘ team of lawyers  outnumbered Pringle’s 100 to 1 on this. I had a hard time finding any info about Pringle so if anyone has anything  please post in the comments.

Bryan Pringle in 2010 sued the Black Eyed Peas and several co-defendants, including record labels EMI April Music Inc. and Interscope Records; French DJ David Guetta, who co-produced several Black Eyed Peas songs; and several music publishing companies.

Pringle contended that the hip-hop group had ripped off “Take a Dive,” which was copyrighted in 1998, particularly a “guitar twang” melody, or “hook,” that he added in a dance version of the song he composed in 1999. However, Pringle could not obtain copyright registration for the dance version because it was deemed to not be substantially different from the original, according to his complaint.

I also found this more recent info. I’m not sure how these legal fees work but all I can seriously think is WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  IS THIS WHAT PEOPLE ARE SPENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON??!

LOS ANGELES (CN) – A federal judge awarded Black Eyed Peas songwriter will.i.am $1 million in costs and attorney’s fees for defending against a claim that the band infringed copyright in the 2009 hit, “I Gotta Feeling.”

The judge awarded another $1.3 million in attorney’s fees to the band’s producer, and $50,000 to the record label.

Pitbull vs. Aerosmith and Run DMC

Pitbull "Fireball" sounds like Aerosmith "Walk this Way"
Left: Pitbull, Right: There are a lot of great random photos of Steven Tyler (Aerosmith). This is one of them.

I don’t have a lot of info on this new Pitbull track but the vocal is very similar to Aerosmith‘s 1975 hit “Walk This Way” (later covered by/with Run D.M.C.). I’m sure it’s some sort of homage, but to Aerosmith or Run D.M.C.?

Pitbull - "Fireball (clip 1)" (2014)

Pitbull - "Fireball (clip 2)" (2014)

Aerosmith - "Walk This Way" (1975)

Aerosmith w/Run D.M.C. - "Walk This Way" (1986)

After hearing the Pitbull track I couldn’t help hearing a bit of Michael Jackson‘s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” Mama-say mama-sah ma-ma-coo-sah chant in the guitar riff. I also just found out this tidbit from Wikipedia:

“The coda is “Mama-say mama-sah ma-ma-coo-sah”. Makossa is a Cameroonian music genre and dance. Dibango sued Jackson and settled out of court for one million French francs, agreeing thereby to waive future rights to this recording but not future use of the material.” from wikipedia
