Avril Lavigne vs. The Rubinoos

Here’s another Lukasz Gottwald (aka Dr. Luke) produced track for the site. This time for the 2007 Avril Lavigne song “Girlfriend”.   The chorus similarity did not go unnoticed by seventies power pop band The Rubinoos whose 1979 single “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” shares a striking resemblance.  In 2007 Rubinoos frontman Tommy Dunbar  and co-writer James Gangwer filed suit in U.S. District Court in Northern California against Lavigne,  Dr. Luke, RCA Records and Apple Inc.

“We are not so naive as to chalk it up to some sort of cosmic coincidence,” Dunbar said in a statement on Thursday. “The lyric, the meter, the rhythm … they’re identical.”

According to PopCrunch.com the case was settled out of court in 2008.

Avril Lavigne has reached a settlement in a lawsuit that accused her of plagiarizing her hit single, “Girlfriend.”

I’d also like to note that The Ramones have a song called “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” released in 1976.   It doesn’t sound like either of these.

Britney Spears vs. Jermaine Jackson vs. Cutting Crew vs. Survivor

The chorus of  Jermaine Jackson‘s “When the Rain Begins to Fall” is strangely familiar to Britney Spears‘ 2011 track “Hold it Against Me”. When I first heard this track I also thought about Survivor’s “Can’t Hold Back” (1984) [who appear previously on ThatSongSoundsLike] and Cutting Crew‘s 1986 hit “(I Just) Died in Your Arms”. It won’t be much of a surprise that this Spears track was produced by none other than Dr. Luke who has made numerous appearances on this site.

Katy Perry vs. t.A.T.u.

Another one from our friend Dr. Luke. This time we’re listening to Katy Perry‘s “E.T.” (2010) and Russian duo t.A.T.u.‘s breakout hit “All The Things She Said”  (2000).

Even Matthew Cole of Slant magazine writes:

…and on the inscrutable “E.T.” Perry compares her lover (favorably?) to a space alien and Dr. Luke nabs the backing track from t.A.T.u.’s “All the Things She Said,” presumably as a tribute to his forbears in the field of exploitative dance-floor schlock.
