Battle of the Saxes (Ariana Grande vs. Jason Derulo vs. Macklemore vs. Wild Sugar)

It has come to my attention from various sources that there is a saxophone epidemic on our hands. I think the interesting thing about it is that the saxophone has always played an odd role in pop music. You have your Kenny G., the late Clarence Clemons (of  Bruce Springstein’s outfit), INXS’s Kirk Pengilly and a slew of other sunglass-wearing guys swaying in the background waiting for their time in the spotlight. I never really thought the saxophone was consider cool in rock and hip-hop but somehow it creeps in there from time to time. Is it making a comeback?

So I can’t decipher if today’s artists are using this instrument ironically in their music or not (I’m guessing a yes for Macklemore).

Let’s have a listen to some saxophone soundalikes:
(note: one of the producers on “Problem” is Max Martin. He has made numerous appearances on this site)

Ariana Grande - "Problem" (2014)
Macklemore - "Thrift Shop" (2012)

Some similarities here as well:

Jason Derulo - "Talk Dirty" (2013)

In a previous post I compared Macklemore vs. Le1f

Le1f - "Wut" (April 2012)

Macklemore - "Thrift Shop" (August 2012)

I thought it was fitting to bring The Beastie Boys into the mix. Their  song “Brass Monkey” features a sample from Wild Sugar. I included them both here:

Wild Sugar - "Bring it Here" (1981)
Beastie Boys - "Brass Monkey" (1986)

And finally in I thought there was a hint of the melody and rhythm of C&C Music Factory’s famous track in Grande’s riff.

C N C Music Factory - "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" (1990)
Ariana Grande - "Problem" (2014)

Macklemore vs. Le1f

This sure puts a new spin on the rap feuds of yesteryear. Today we are talking about Macklemore and Le1f.  Le1f is a bit bent out of shape for a number of reasons and you can read all about that on this buzzfeed post. Did you engage in the conversation on buzzfeed and get upset about somebody else’s comment and start your own feud? Good, that’s what they want. If you got too distracted by Le1f’s deleted tweets and missed the actual music part, here it is:

Le1f - "Wut" (April 2012)

Macklemore - "Thrift Shop" (August 2012)

So if you’re wondering what all of the fuss is about Le1f is upset that Macklemore’s “Same Love” (2012) won a VMA (“Video Music Award”(that’s a show on MTV (that’s “Music Television” (they used to play music videos (“TV” is this box you probably used to have in your living room that tuned in channels that would show commercials and your favorite TV shows like “That’s Incredible” and “The Jeffersons” ))))). Macklemore is a straight, white guy. Le1f is a gay, black guy. So in addition to there being issue with “Same Love” (a pro gay rights track), “Thrift Shop” has some clear similarities to “Wut”. Did I get that right?

And for your enjoyment, all videos are worth watching. At time of posting “Thrift Shop” has over 409 MILLION plays!

Audra Mae vs. Macklemore

Check out this part in Macklemore‘s “Can’t Hold Us”  (2011) and Audra Mae & The Almighty Sound’s 2012 song “Jebidiah Moonshine’s Friday Night Shack Party”. It’s not totally similar but I figured I would post it anyway!
