Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” Ripped From This Song

Posted on by — 2 Comments ↓

I’m surprised this one hasn’t come up before! I was scrolling TikTok and came across this post from Monday Music Club with Willy J. Willy also mentions this Nirvana/Killing Joke example and a Beatles example I don’t have on the site. Go check him out!

Turns out that this one was even settled out of court. Sam Harris, a contestant of Star Search (it was like The Voice or America’s Got Talent) went on to a recording and acting career. His 1984 song “Sugar Don’t Bite” reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. Madonna released “Papa Don’t Preach in 1986. There’s a bunch more Madonna on the site (it should be popping up on the page for ya). Have a listen to these below!

Bonus, the video for “Sugar Don’t Bite” is pure 80’s magic:

Maddona vs. Imagine Dragons

I thought I was crazy but Ryan G submitted this and confirmed my belief that Imagine Dragons’ “Demons” sounds a bit like Madonna‘s “Like a Prayer”. Maybe it’s more of the vocal cadence. Have a listen:

Public Enemy vs. Madonna

According to Songfacts.com Public Enemy decided not to sue Madonna for sampling “Security of the First World” (1988) in her 1990 controversial song and video “Justify My Love”.  According to Wikipedia additional controversy surrounded the track as well:

“Justify My Love” was written by Lenny Kravitz, Ingrid Chavez and Madonna. Kravitz wrote the song for Madonna, based on a poem written by friend and Prince protégé Ingrid Chavez. Kravitz added the title hook and chorus. Madonna contributed a few lines. Chavez was not credited for the song and later sued Kravitz in 1992. She received an out-of-court settlement, and gained a co-writing credit.
