I know, it’s a fairly common pop punk riff but here’s Blink-182 and Green Day. And there’s a lot of Green Day on this site.
Blink-182 - "What's My Age Again?" (1999)
Green Day - "Basket Case" (1993)

Both are similar to the original MTV theme music. As you say, a common riff.
It’s a simple chord progression. Maybe you should instead compare Basket Case to Pachelbel’s Canon, whose chord progression was quite distinct.
Sounds more like “favorite son” from GDs broadway album.

Yea, Pachelbel’s Canon has not just been done by Green Day but you should also check out Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton and Hook by Blues Traveler
I’ve always thought Basket Case was just a sped up rip off of Blind Melon’s No Rain.

I think I screwed up with the links but just go to about the 50s mark on No Rain and the 1min mark on Basket Case and you’ll hear it.
Yes, but Basket Case is said to be based on Pachelbel’s Canon. Anyway, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera (2002) is also similar.
While I’m on the subject, the verse of The Voice Within (2002) sounds like a combination of From This Moment On by Shania Twain (1997) and I Know Him So Well from Chess, performed by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson and written by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA fame, and lyrics by Tim Rice (1984).
Yeh I was trying to sing No Rain to my girlfriend and she kept insisting I was singing Basket Case. Hadn’t noticed the similarity until then!
how about where blink was ripped off(unless of course its like something else older)
