Weezer vs. Midnight Oil

On the Gwen Stefani vs. Weezer vs. Lita Ford post Peter points out the similarities of Weezer’s “Has Pipe” and Midnight Oil‘s “Beds are Burning”:

Weezer lifted that riff from Midnight Oil’s 1987 song “Beds are Burning”.

Nice. Yeah, I have Juicebox in the queue. There’s definitely a Peter Gunn theme going on there as well

Joe, Excellent! I don’t know why I didn’t catch that one before. Will definitely be posting that one shortly.

That’s not very similar. The Midnight Oil track is a continous note strummed over a 4/4 beat. The Weezer track consists of various muted notes.

    The vocals are completley different.

The only similarity is the temp, and if we are gonna stick with tempo’s then this site will suck fast!

Talking about “Beds Are Burning”, I always think the ending riff is just half of the signature riff of “smoke on the water”…And you surely where deep purple lifted this riff.

Some people have mentioned Form Whom the Bell Tolls, and the Peter Gunn theme( which I agree the Strokes ripped off), but they are just similar tempo bass lines. That “jaws”-type bass line is common but if you look at the actual notes its a bitt different in each case. Not to mention Weezer puts a guitar riff over it.
